Perception is reality. We -Sardine & Tobleroni- have selected the title Sensations in reference to the famous art exhibition Sensation that kick-started the career of quite a few British artists in the 1990s.   In order to create a buzz and seek (cheap) attention a lot of artists desperately try to come up with so-called controversial and sensational artwork that breaks taboos, explores the forbidden, attempts to be different in structure, concept & realization or is so outrageous in its character that the simple minded finds it either genius, of superior quality or hates it and seeks to destroy it. Attention seems to be the key to success, not only in the art world but also in the general entertainment business. Everyone wants to have an edgy & outstanding personality with a touch of craziness, people rediculize themselves for fame.   Saying all this we do not condemn if artists try to seek new horizons by being hopelessly pathetic because this is of critical importance in terms of cultural evolution. Anyhow, we have created a body of fictitious work that represents the world as we see and read it, as a sort of real illusion just like that outrageous artwork that is outrageous for the sake of being outrageous and crazy. However, it is of course possible to realize all those ideas and plans which we might do one day or when commissioned. For the time being we see this collection of work as our artwork.

The main part of Sensations is the Press Release, which is the vehicle for the whole collection and a piece of artwork in itself. Note that this is a growing collection of work. Please do not take Sensations too seriously. However, at the same time we urge you to look at it as an interesting piece of work, a collection of works. We apologize in advance to all the people we mention in the Press Release. Also note that our representing gallery has nothing to do with Sensations. Thanks. SARDINE & TOBLERONI - SENSATIONS at the 54 th Venice Biennale

Once again invited by the Venice Biennale Committee Professor Werner Geldzahler will be presenting for the very first time Sardine & Tobleroni's latest and most comprehensive work titled SENSATIONS, a collection of so-called sensational art work during the 54th Venice Biennale from the 4th of June until the 27th of November 2011.  

SENSATIONS challenges the very nature of art & political activism commenting on trends in politics and society. It is a critical view of mankind's intellectual, social and cultural evolution/devolution. Sardine & Tobleroni have been working on SENSATIONS for over three years collecting audio-interviews and letters from convicted serial rapists and politicians, sperm donations, suicide tapes etc. Some of the works in the SENSATIONS- collection have already stirred up great controversy resulting in Sardine & Tobleroni to be blacklisted in various art competitions and institutions.

The official opening party for SENSATIONS takes place on Friday 3rd of June 2011 at 6pm at Ca' Giustinian with an introduction by Professor Werner Geldzahler and Bice Curriger, curator of the 54th Venice Biennale, followed by a Q&A with Sardine & Tobleroni, Biennale president Paolo Baratta and Gerald Malanga.  There will be a special appearance and performance by the Surviving Members of Andy Warhol's Factory and Captain Kirk-Is-the-Best.

Sardine & Tobleroni

The Swiss-Portuguese art duo Sardine and Tobleroni have surfaced to the world of art in 2010 with their first solo exhibition We Love 77 in London which received thousands of visitors and made major headlines. The decidedly unique pairing, Sardine & Tobleroni have been working together for four years. Sardine & Tobleroni's most spectacular stunt was their in 2009 instigated "Shit Run" at London's Tate Modern where 50 volunteers covered in human feces were asked to run around Tate Modern shouting out loud the phrase "You think shit. You buy shit. You are shit!" Subsequently Sardine & Tobleroni got arrested and charged with a fine of £10.000. For more info: www.themonkeyinthebox.com

Nuovamente invitato dal comitato della Biennale di Venezia, il Professor Werner Geldzahler presenterà per la prima volta SENSATIONS, l'ultima e più controversa opera del duo Sardine & Tobleroni. Una collezione di opere d' arte sensazionale che sarà esposta nella cinquantaquattresima Biennale di Venezia.

SENSATIONS sfida la vera natura dell'attivismo artistico e politico, commentando trend sociali e politici. È una visione critica dell'intellettualità umana, e della sua evoluzione e devoluzione sociale e culturale. Sardine & Tobleroni hanno lavorato alla preparazione di SENSATIONS per oltre tre anni, collezionando audio    interviste, lettere di politici e stupratori reclusi, donazioni di sperma, registrazioni di messaggi di suicidii etc. Alcuni dei lavori nella collezione di SENSATIONS hanno già suscitato grandi controversie, per cui Sardine & Tobleroni sono sulla lista nera di numerose istituzioni e concorsi artistici.

La coppia di artisti Svizzero-Portoghese Sardine & Tobleroni si è affacciata sul panorama artistico internazionale nel 2010, con la prima esibizione londinese di We Love 77 ( Noi amiamo il '77 ), che ha riscosso successo di pubblico e   stampa. Duo di artisti decisamente unico, Sardine & Tobleroni lavorano insieme da ormai quattro anni. L'espediente artistico più spettacolare di Sardine & Tobleroni è stata la "Shit Run", letteralmente la "corsa della merda", istigata nel 2009 dai due artisti presso il museo Tate Modern   di Londra. Ai cinquanta volontari prescelti è stato chiesto di correre intorno al museo coperti di feci umane e   gridando   "Fai pensieri di merda. Compri merda. Sei una merda!" Post Scriptum di Sardine & Tobleroni.

La percezione è realtà. Noi -Sardine e Tobleroni- abbiamo scelto di chiamare questa esposizione Sensations    ispirandoci all'omonima manifestazione artistica che negli anni Novanta ha lanciato e promosso molti artisti contemporanei inglesi.   Per far rumore e attirare gratuitamente (o quasi) l'attenzione, molti artisti cercano disperatamente di inventarsi opere d'arte controverse e sensazionali che possano abbattere dei tabù, esplorare temi inviolati, tentare di apparire diverse per struttura, concetto e realizzazione.   Magari tentano anche di apparire talmente tanto oltraggiosi nella loro forma da lasciarsi definire dalle menti più semplici   come geniali, di qualità indiscussa, oppure insulsi e deplorabili.

Sembra che l'attenzione sia la chiave del successo non soltanto nel mondo dell'arte, ma in qualsiasi altra forma di intrattenimento. Tutti vorrebbero essere nervosi ed eccezionali, a volte un po' folli. Le persone si lasciano ridicolizzare per essere famose.

Nell'affermare questo, non intendiamo condannare gli artisti che cercano nuovi orizzonti mostrandosi apertamente patetici, perchè ciò è di vitale importanza nell' evoluzione culturale.

Le opere e I contenuti che abbiamo creato per Sensations rappresentano il mondo come lo vediamo e percepiamo, come una sorta di llusione reale, un'opera d'arte oltraggiosa soltanto per il gusto di essere oltraggiosi e folli.

La parte più imporatnte di Sensations è la sua rassegna stampa, che è un veicolo di promozione dell'intera collezione e un opera d'arte in se'. É da notare che si tratta di una collezione di opere in via di ampliamento.

Per favore, non prendete Sensations troppo sul serio.

Allo stesso tempo vi invitiamo a considerarla come un lavoro interessante, una collezione di opere e lavori che ha, piuttosto, un serio messaggio politico e sociale.
